John M. Smithson and Lucy were married in Campbell Co., Virginia in 1801 and migrated to Clark Co., Kentucky shortly after. They also lived in Madison County, Kentucky, from which they chose to go further west with their son, William D. Smithson and his family to Morgan Co, Illinois.
Lucy and John M. Smithson were the parents of ten or more children, some of whom migrated to Scott Co. along with their parents. John M. Smithson and Lucy H. Dabney both died in 1837 in the part of Morgan Co., that became Scott County in 1839. Markers were not placed until after son William died in 1874, as requested in his will.
