Gospel preacher.
Elias Smith was the son of Stephen Smith (1737-1806) and Irena “Raney” Ransom (1749-1825). He was born in Lyme, Connecticut, on June 17, 1769. His father was a Baptist and his mother a Congregationalist. He studied medicine and became a doctor, which provided support for him and his family. He married Mary Burleigh (1773-1814), married in January 1793. They had two sons, Matthew and Daniel. He was baptized by Elder Grow in 1769 and became a member of the Baptist Church. In 1807 decided to cease preaching and left the Baptist Church. In 1802 he joined the Christian Connection and organized a church of Christ in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Later the church became known as the Christian Church. Between 1816 and 1840 Elias Smith advocated Universalism. In 1840 he renounced Universalism and rejoined the Christian Church. Sadly, however, the brethren never fully trusted him and that limited his opportunity and service. He died in Lynn Massachusetts on June 29, 1846, at the age of 77. Elias Smith is remembered as a doctor, a preacher, a writer, and a publisher.
