Firefighter Robert J. O'Toole of the Washington Township Fire Department and Officer Kalaman of the Centerville Police Department were both killed after being struck by a vehicle at the scene of an accident on I-675.
They went to the scene of the accident and were checking on the victims when another vehicle lost control on the icy road, and slid into the median strip, striking them plus one other firefighter.

Officer Kalaman died killed instantly and Firefighter O'Toole died after being flown to Miami Valley Hospital. The person who struck them was issued two minor traffic citations and a $200 fine.

The Kalaman family pushed for Ohio's Move Over/Slow Down law that was adopted in 1999. It requires drivers passing stopped emergency vehicles to move over a lane. If they cannot, they must slow down.

The annual John P. Kalaman Memorial Golf Tournament is held to raise money for a local scholarship fund, a yearly blood drive is given in his name, and the City of Centerville named a street after him.
