From the Baldwin Times, Bay Minette, Alabama, published December 5, 1963:
"Death Claims Dan C. Benton, 57, Husband Of Times Correspondent
Dan C. Benton, 57, husband of The Times Daphne correspondent, died Monday morning of an apparent heart attack.
A resident of Daphne for the past 15 years, Benton had the night before rehearsed with the Mobile Symphony orchestra in preparation for a Monday performance.
A native of Macon, Ga.; Benton was a graduate of Mercer University, and had been active in Mobile and Eastern Shore music and art circles for many years.
During the 1920's, he and Mrs. Benton were stars on the Goldenrod Showboat which cruised the Mississippi, giving entertainments in the local towns along the river.
Benton had been employed with George A. Fuller, Sr., since 1946, and was secretary-treasurer of the Old Spanish Fort, Inc., which included responsibility as auditor for the motel-restaurant and related activities.
He also was a director in the Spanish Fort Estates Utility Company.
Benton was probably best known in Mobile and the area for work with the Joe Jefferson players and the Mobile Theatre Guild, and for his work in musical circles, having played violin since 1946 with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra.
His lodge affiliations included the Elks Club of Fairhope, in which he had been active many years.
Benton is survived by his wife, King Benton; a daughter and a son; also his father, a sister and two brothers, of Datona (sic) Beach, Fla, and La Jolla, California.
Funeral services were held at the Daphne Methodist Cemetery. Higgins Brown Service Mortuaries of Fairhope handled the arrangements."
