FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DR BARRETT -

Funeral rites for Dr N A Barrett, who passed away Tuesday night at the home of his brother, George Barrett, in McGlathery Addition, were held Thursday afternoon at Southside Baptist Church with Reverend J C Stivender, of Ruhama Baptist Church of Birmingham and Reverend J D Pickens, of the Southside Church officiating.

Interment took place at Decatur cemetery with Brown directing.

Dr Barrett, a former president of Birmingham city commission, had made his home in Decatur for the past three years. City hall offices at Birmingham were closed Thursday afternoon out of deference to Dr Barrett. Birmingham city officials, former colleagues and friends of Dr Barrett, attended the funeral here yesterday.

Nathaniel A. Barrett was born near Moulton, Lawrence, AL to David B. and his wife, Charlotte (Wilson) Barrett. He was a grandson of William Wilson, an early settler of Lawrence County.

His early education was in public schools and he entered the Baptist Male and Female Institute in Moulton. He taught school 6 months of the year to defray his expenses. He attended the Medical College of AL for a year, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1886, with a degree in medicine.

He practiced medicine in Danville, AL for 5 years and then moved to East Lake, AL in 1891 where he was elected their first mayor. He moved to Birmingham, AL where he was President of the Birmingham City Commission. He simultaneously stayed active in various medical associations.

May 5, 1891, he married Annie P. Troup, daughter of Frank J. Troup of Danville, AL. Her father was Superintendent of Education of Morgan County.
