According to Bishop Francis Asbury's Journal, recording his movements in January of 1790, he was at "Ellis's church" in Sussex County, Virginia on the 7th. By the 14th they had crossed the Roanoke River into Warren
County, North Carolina where they "slept at Stephen Shell's." In 1799 Stephen was one of the founders of Tranquil Methodist Church in Newberry District, South Carolina and served it for many years as pastor.
On Sunday, December 12, 1802, it is recorded in Asbury's journal that "I was called upon by recommendation to ordain Stephen Shell... to the office of deacon."
