Prior to her move to Carillon, she resided with her daughter and son-in-law: Beth and Dean Thomas of Mt. Holly, N. C.
Miss Annie was born on August 1, 1921 to Coy and Eliza Smith Coward in Richmond County, N. C. and was the sister to 12 brothers and sisters.
She met and fell in love with a young man by the name of Wade McKnight and married in November of 1940.
Miss Annie loved the Lord with all her heart and it showed in the work she did for Him. Whether in her home, her church or missions, she loved helping others. Miss Annie was instrumental in starting a prison ministry in her late 20s while a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Richmond County. Miss Annie had a passion for missions and was much involved in the WMU organizations of various churches where her husband pastored over their 40 year ministry. Most recently, she was the homebound ministry coordinator at Woodlawn Baptist Church, where she was a long time member. She also loved her Sunday School class and was an assistant teacher for many years.
Miss Annie attended schools in Richmond and Gaston County and also Wingate College (University). She taught at McAdenville Day Care and also Lowell Elementary as a teacher's assistant in the reading lab.
Miss Annie was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Rev. Wade A. McKnight of Lowell, her parents, Coy and Eliza Coward; five brothers: Thurman Coward, Jim Coward, Luke Coward, Walker Coward, Mike Coward; two sisters: Molly Bailey, Beatrice Rouse and two sisters under the age of 3.
Miss Annie is survived by four children: Patsy M. Warlick and husband Jim of Vale, N. C., James C. McKnight and wife Ann of Lowell, N. C., Beth M. Thomas and husband Dean of Mt. Holly, N. C., Sue M. Wells and husband Kent of Warsaw, N. C.; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Baker and husband Bobby of Wallace, S. C., Pearl Bullard of Hamlet, N. C.; one brother: Harmon Coward and wife Orene of Rockingham, N. C.; five sister-in-laws: Ruby Coward of Rockingham, N. C., Shirley Coward of Texas, Carol Edwards and Mildred McKnight of Kings Mountain, N. C., Barbara McKnight of Wisconsin; one brother-in-law: Frank McKnight of Chesterfield, S. C. And a Special Thanks to Shirley Cowan for her love and attention given to Miss Annie.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P. M. to 2:45 P. M. Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1101 N. Main Street, Lowell, N. C. and at other times at the home of James and Ann McKnight, 705 McAdenville Avenue, Lowell, N. C.
Funeral services will be 3:00 P. M. Saturday at Woodlawn Baptist Church with the Rev. David Clippard, Rev. Walt Griggs officiating.
Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia, N. C.
