Joe Roddy Starr


On Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 11:40 PM, Joe Roddy Starr, departed this life at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Often affectionately called "Joe Daddy, Papa Joe, and Mr. Starr." Joe was born January 17, 1933, in York, SC to the late Roddy and Annie Graham Starr. He grew up in Kings Mountain, NC and graduated from Lincoln Academy High School and continued his education career when he earned his B. S. from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC and his Masters Degree from Fisk University, Nashville, TN.

Joe loved to learn and had a thirst for education and truly loved his chosen profession - teaching children. Joe retired as an outstanding physics and chemisty teacher from Martinsville High School in 1994 with 36 years of service, where he served as Science Department Chairperson and Senior Sponsor. He later taught on the college level with 4 years at Patrick Henry Community College.

Joe was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Men's Council, Trustee Board and the Men's Senior Choir.

Joe served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Joe was a lifetime member of NEA & VEA for retired teachers and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Martinsville Alumni Chapter. He was a member of the Martinsville and Henry County N A A C P, KuWat Shriners Temple, Sons of Solomon Lodge # 111 and also a member of the American Legion Homer Dillard Post # 78.

Joe leaves to cherish his precious memories of 53 years, his devoted wife, Argatha Fontaine Starr; his two daughters, Regenia (Lenny) Noel, of Martinsville, VA; and Rhonda G. Starr, of Richmond, VA; the light of his life, his only granddaughter, Jazma N. Scott, of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Albert (Eurnice) Starr, of Durham, NC; two sisters, Hazel S. Brown of Kings Mountain, NC; and Dorothy (Calvin) Johnson, of Roseboro, NC; one god daughter, Carla F. Tarpley, of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 12, 2009 at Grace Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, officiating. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
