Longtime Anchorage attorney Francis "Frank" E. Smith Jr., 50, died April 6 in Seattle from complications arising from cancer treatment. A visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Eighth Avenue and E Street, with a rosary. A funeral was at Holy Family Cathedral with the Rev. Dan Hebert of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church officiating. A reception followed in the parish hall.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 28, 1941, in Missoula, Mont. He came to Alaska with his family in 1943. After growing up in Summit, Northway, King Salmon, Annette and Cordova, he graduated from Cordova High School in 1958. As summer work during and after high school, he was a reporter for the Cordova Times, a commercial fisherman, cannery worker, agent for the Cordova Airlines and a survey crew member near the Kennicott copper mines. Mr. Smith was awarded a degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. He met his wife while serving in the military in Seoul, Korea. Following military service, he graduated from the University of Washington School of Law in 1968. He returned to Alaska and joined the firm of Ely, Guess, Rudd and Havelock, now Guess and Rudd, where he became a partner in 1971. At the time of his death, he was a senior partner in the firm. Mr. Smith founded and for many years ran the firm's litigation department. He specialized in construction law and the prosecution and defense of cases against architects, engineers, and contractors. His family said: "As a lawyer, he was well-known and highly regarded for his careful research and meticulous legal drafting. He took special pleasure in impressing younger lawyers with the importance of these skills." As an active member of the Alaska Bar Association, Mr. Smith served on the ABA's fee arbitration and grievance committees. He donated a substantial amount of time to the ABA's Pro Bono Project. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Association for Retarded Citizens of Anchorage. According to his family, Mr. Smith was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed a variety of family activities, particularly boating in Prince William Sound for many years. He also had a deep appreciation for the arts and supported the Anchorage Symphony, the Anchorage Historic and Fine Arts Museum and other arts groups.
