Melba was born May 2, 1945, in Pittsylvania County and was the daughter of the late George Thomas Fitzgerald and Nannie Ella Rowland Fitzgerald.
She was predeceased by her husband, Larry "Pete" Barbour, and a daughter, Penny Barbour Wright.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gretna Branch. She was formerly employed by Sarah Lee Knitting of Gretna, and was a retired health care provider.

Melba is also survived by many dear friends, including Josephine Keen, Bonnie Hart, Lois Wheeler, Candy Payne, Dustin Wood, and her beloved dog Frisky. Also a special thank you to Dr. Van Dyke and everyone at Centra Hospice.
