Robert Smith Thorup, 74, dedicated husband, father and grandfather, passed away on July 18, 1993, in Salt Lake City, after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born May 24, 1919, in Salt Lake City, to Alvin Theobald and Mary Leona Smith Thorup. Bob married Evelyn Jean Olson on September 10, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. A successful small businessman, Bob owned and operated the "Campus Boot Shop" shoe store at Broadway and Main in Salt Lake, and the "Bob & Jean Shop" children's wear store in Rose Park.

Bob attended East High School, and graduated from the University of Utah in 1943, with a degree in business. Affiliated with Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Bob was elected Alumni President in 1947 and served as president of the Pi Kappa Alpha House Corporation for 22 years. He received the "Outstanding Alumnus Award" in 1965.

He served as a missionary to Australia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where, as secretary to the mission president, he skillfully directed the evacuation of missionaries from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands because of World War II. Bob served with the Pacific forces of the United States Navy as a Lieutenant and Beachmaster in the Saipan and Okinawa landings.

Bob was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many ward and stake positions. He loved the Lord with all his heart and attended the temple on almost a daily basis. He was a worker in the Salt Lake Temple and derived deep satisfaction from helping those attending the temple.

Bob is survived by his wife, two sons, Alvin Robert (Nancy Wise) and Gary Richard (Suzanne Ferry), both of Salt Lake City; by his daughter, Rebecca (Ronald Arbon), who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and by his 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Vera (Daniel P.) Heiner, and his brother, D. Wallace (Jeanne) Thorup, both of Salt Lake City.

Funeral services will be held at the Mountain View 1st Ward Chapel, 1400 South 19th East, in Salt Lake City on Thursday, July 22, 1993 at 12 noon. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 South 2nd East, Salt Lake City and at the chapel between 10:45 and 11:45 on the morning of the funeral.
