Newspaper Publisher. Born in Suibara, Japan, Abiko came to the United States in 1885 and graduated from the University of California Berkeley. In 1897 he purchased a Japanese newspaper and in 1899, merged it to form Nichibei Shimbun, or the Japanese American News. Published until 1942, the newspaper soon became the leading Japanese language immigrant newspaper and was later expanded with English for Nisei (second-generation Japanese immigrant) readers. In 1906 he founded his first Japanese Christian community of Yamato Colony in Livingston, California.
