He was the loving husband of Maerean Birdsong, his devoted wife of 51 years. He leaves behind a son, Carl Birdsong (Lois) of Salinas, daughter, Debra Birdsong-Teresa (Mike) of Rocklin, step-daughter, Sandy DeVries (Gus) of Oregon, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, 11 siblings, daughter, Wilma Schmidt (Green) and step-daughter, Sharon Matthews. Bob owned and operated a cafe/grocery store/gas station in Ark., and two grocery stores in Calif. He worked for Golden State Foods (Foremost) in Merced prior to moving to the Salinas plant where he was employed as foreman. In 1971 he and Maerean moved to Hollister to operate their Foremost Distributorship until retiring in 1980.
The biggest joy of Bob's life was his family. He was an avid gardener on both a large and small scale, enjoyed fishing in their catfish pond, and relished cooking a good meal. He was especially fond of preparing his delicious BBQ's for family gatherings. A kind and gentle man, he was dearly loved and will be missed by family and friends.
