Frederick was educated for the ministry, his people being Swiss Presbyterians. He acquired fluency in the speaking of six different languages. In 1840 he came to the United States. He decided about that time he was not fitted for the ministry, and in New York he learned the trade of blacksmithing and carraige making, and that was his steady occupation throughout his active career. He came to the South before the War Between the States, and during that struggle did service on gunboats at Savannah and New Orleans in the Confederate Navy. For many years he was a carraige manufacturer in Albany, Georgia.
