Note: "Frances" on headstone, but true name was "Francis". Male, as opposed to female.

Listed in 1860 census, residing with parents and siblings, in Hannisville, Berkeley County, Va. Apprentice carpenter.

Enlisted in Co. E, 2nd Virgina Infantry, March 4, 1862, Winchester, Va. Captured at 1st Kernstown, March 23, 1862. POW at Ft. Delaware; exchanged August 8, 1862. Wounded in the lung, at the Brawner Farm (2nd Manassas), August 28, 1862. Sent to hospital in Aldie, Virginia, where he was captured and paroled on site, by the 9th NY Cav. Returned to duty, showing as present on rolls of July-Aug. 1863. Transfered to Co. C, Oct. 31, 1864. Paroled, Appomattox C.H., Va., April 9, 1865.
