In 1887, according to Charles Bates, William H. H. Adams had been confined to the State Hospital for the Insane "for a time," but was at home when the document was filed. Apparently there was a relapse, because in 1889, Mary E. Adams indicated to the court that William H. H. Adams of Monroe County, Indiana, was of unsound mind. Charles Bates wanted to be appointed as his guardian. Bates asked the court for permission to sell some of Adams' property as there was no male in the household able to care for said property.
