Born and raised in Memphis, he attended Georgia Tech on an athletic scholarship, staring in both football and baseball. In the 1929 Rose Bowl, he was one of the GT players who tackled Roy "Wrong Way" Riegels on his own goal line, after he ran 70 yards in the WRONG direction with a recovered fumble, a play which became sports legend! After graduating from Georgia Tech (senior class president) he was a professional baseball player for one year, as an outfielder for the St. Louis Browns. Later in life, he was a Southeastern Conference sports official. In 1930, he married Alberta B. Gilbertson, also of Memphis, TN.
