Funeral services for Randall Emery Swanson, 84, Omaha, Nebraska, formerly of Red Oak, Iowa, were Monday, December 18, 2000, at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak with Rev. Gordon Watson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak and the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Swanson died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at the Plattsmouth Manor in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
He was born October 18, 1916, in Page County near Essex to Ivan J. and Ruth (Enstrand) Swanson. He was united in marriage to Lola Jane Wagner, May 31, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He served his country during World War 11 with the U. S. Army Combat Engineers in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he worked a carpenter for his father. Upon his father's retirement in 1954, he became the general contractor for Ivan J. Swanson and Son. He built and remodeled many homes in Montgomery and Page counties. He was active in the Red Oak baseball and basketball town teams before the war and the softball leagues after the war. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #67 in Red Oak. He was a former member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge and VFW. He enjoyed his lifelong Oby of raising Gold and Silver Seabright Bantam Chickens and various breeds of pigeons, which included breeding a new strain of white pearl-eyed Rollers.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Lola Jane Swanson, August 30, 1983; his parents; and an infant son, Thomas Ivan Swanson.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly J. and Michael D. Smith of Beaver Lake, Nebraska; daughter, Barbara J. Rehms of Omaha; sister, Corinne Worthington of Grand Island, Nebraska; granddaughters and husbands, Shelley J. Burson and Kirk S. Burson, Ellen S. Dasher and Kevin S. Dasher; great-granddaughters, Kelsey J. Burson and Katelyn A. Burson; niece Deanna Jacobsen; nephew, Terry Dillon; other relatives and friends.
