July 1910, he related to the The Citizen Newspaper that "his grandfather on the parental side of his house was a personal friend of George Washington, under whom he fought for seven years. This great grandsire, he said, was a powerful man of fine physique and was seven feet six inches in height. He came to America from Germany and lived to the exceptional age of 130 years. Many of his descendants lived in Northwestern Ohio and were noted for being very tall of stature. At that time the old gentleman remarked that he had not used tobacco in any form for 30 years."

He had a full beard nearly black and his heavy eyebrows were very black. He walked quite freely with the aid of a cane and did not need eye glasses. (1910)

He came down with a bad cold and after a relapse a nurse from Spokane cared for him for about a week. The direct cause of his death was from advanced age and uremia.

He passed away peacefully at the farm home south of town where he lived with his two sons and a daughter, J. C. and C. G. Hollopeter and Mrs. McAllister.
