Miranda Caroline Hanna was married to Isaac Walter Hassell, Sr. at the home of her father Capt. James Hanna in Sardis, Tennessee on Oct. 7, 1866 by E.D. Smith, Esq. (her brother-in-law).
In 1875 she and her husband owned and operated the first hotel in Sardis, TN in which the first post office was located. Isaac Hassel was the first postmaster of Sardis. A bell that set on the check-in desk at the hotel was passed down through the Hanna Family to Mrs Beulah Oldham and her husband John Thomas "JT"Hanna. When Sardis was incorporated in 1949, JT Hanna is listed as first Mayor in the original charter. The bell was used by Mrs. Beulah when she taught school for 40 years. In 2018 the bell was given to the new Mayor of Sardis ( 6th generation descendant of Capt James Hanna) and so it will continue to the next generation.
Mrs. M.C. Hanna/Hassell passed away at the age of 85 years. For the past seven years she had made her home in Jackson with her daughter Mrs L.V. Hanna and during her residence in that city had made a wide circle of friends who will regret her passing. She was a member of the Sardis Methodist Church, having joined in early life, and for many years was most active in the affairs of the church. She was the mother of the late Rev. J.A. Hassell of Memphis, TN. She was brought to Sardis where the funeral was held by Rev. T.N. Smith (her nephew) and internment followed in the Sardis cemetery.
