Long Illness Is Fatal Thursday For H.J. Beckham
Harvie J. Beckham, resident of Caddo county for 40 years, died Thursday in the Carnegie hospital after an illness of several months. He suffered a stroke in July, 1961, and had spent most of the time since in the Veterans' hospital in Oklahoma City and here at the local hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Fairview church, located 20 miles north of Carnegie. Interment was at the Fairview cemetery. Rev. A.F. Heusel, retired minister and Rev. Alvin W. Baker, pastor of the Alfalfa Baptist church, officiated. The Carnegie Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars held committal services.
Beckham was born at Martins Mills, Tenn., on December 7, 1889, to Mr. and Mrs. F.S. Beckham. When he was 11 years old, he moved with his parents to Cleveland county, Oklahoma. Later the family moved to New Mexico. As a young man, he worked as a cowboy on the Matador Ranch in Motley county, Texas. From there he was inducted into the United States Army on July 24, 1918, and served overseas with Company A. 27th Division. He was discharged April 14, 1919.
He had been a resident of Fort Cobb, Eakly and Carnegie communities since his discharge. He was converted in his early years. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Marvie, a twin, and Luther and Coy.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruie Mettz, Carnegie; a brother, Carl Beckham of Tulsa; an uncle, John Rose of Springer, Okla., and other relatives, including several nieces and nephews.
