James Thomas Oliver
Longtime Anchor Point resident James Thomas Oliver died at his home Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, from complications of a stroke. He was 82.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Ninilchik Full Gospel Assembly Church. A gathering will immediately follow the services at the church. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post No. 10221. Graveside services will be held Monday, Nov. 12 where Mr. Oliver will be laid to rest at the Hickerson Memorial Cemetery in Homer.
Mr. Oliver was born June 26, 1925, to John and Serena (Castleman) Oliver in Lookeba, Okla. He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a first class seaman until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Oliver homesteaded in Anchor Point in 1958 and married his wife, Betty in 1949.
He worked in various construction jobs, was a crane operator and assisted in building numerous bridges. In 1968 he moved to Cantwell where he performed missionary work. He continued ministering and working construction in Anchorage where he resided from 1972 to 1976. Mr. Oliver also had worked on the pipeline in Prudhoe Bay and Valdez in 1976. He was an ordained minister and founded two churches the Anchor Point Lighthouse Assembly of God Church and the Ninilchik Full Gospel Assembly of God Church. Mr. Oliver worked as a commercial fisherman in Homer and Ninilchik. He had an airplane and loved to fly. He and his wife spent several winters on the big island in Hawaii.
"He loved to hunt and fish but most of all he loved to preach. Jim was a loving husband, father and minister and will be greatly missed, He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bush piloting and liked to work with wood," his family said.
Mr. Oliver is survived by his wife of 58 years of Anchor Point; sons, Craig Oliver of Sacramento, Calif., and John Oliver of Altrus, Ark.; daughters, Patricia Richards of Happy Valley and Sharon Wheeler of Ninilchik; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to the Dream Center of Alaska, free recovery program for Alaska men and women, Assembly of God State Offices, 1048 West International Airport Rd. Suite 101, Anchorage, AK 99518-1005.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
