Matthew A. Gordon, 87, of Heritage Manor, died Saturday, May 22, 2010, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Hoffmann Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a parish scripture service at 6:30 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1922, in Rickardsville, Iowa, son of Adam and Barbara Potts. He married Joan E. Howe on June 2, 1949, at Nativity Catholic Church; she preceded him in death in 2002.

Matthew served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He owned and operated his own shoe repair store. He later was employed as an assembler at John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring after 37 years of service.

He was a member of Holy Ghost Parish and the Holy Spirit Pastorate, and the UAW. He volunteered his time to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, delivering food around the city. Matthew enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, pitching horseshoes, grocery shopping, tinkering in his shop, bowling with his wife, watching the Cubs and other sports on television, and sitting outdoors in nice weather.

Surviving are his daughters, Andrea (Gary) Muntz, of Dubuque, Leslie (James) Schlacks, of Machesney Park, Ill., and Francesca (Mike) Smith, of Salt Lake City; sons, Jeffrey D. (Debra) and David, both of Minneapolis, and Luke, of Hiawatha, Iowa; grandchildren, Rachel and Greg Muntz, Jessie and Jeremy Schlacks and Joshua and Kyle Gordon; stepgrandchildren, Isaac, Addison and Toren Smith; and a brother, Lawrence, of Tennessee.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Sylvester and Francis.
