Historian, lawyer and politician, the son of Vicente López y Planes, author of the lyrics of the Argentine National Anthem. He joined the Literary Hall of Marcos Sastre, and the Association of May. Opposer of governor Juan Manuel de Rosas, he emigrated to Uruguay and later settled in Chile between 1840 and 1853. There, in association with Domingo F. Sarmiento founded a school called El Liceo. During the presidency of his father, he was minister. He was considered one of Argentina's most prominent lawyers of his time and appointed rector of the University of Buenos Aires between 1873 to 1876. He was a national deputy from 1876 to 1879. He also was finance minister under President Carlos Pellegrini (1890 to 1892). Along with Bartolome Mitre, are considered the founders of the historiography of Argentina.
