Nicholas Rice, 89, Pettibone Pioneer, Buried on Friday
The Pettibone community was saddened last Monday upon learning of the death of a dear friend and neighbor, Nicholas Rice, who had been ill for some time and a patient at the Jamestown hospital.
He was a staunch member of the Farmers Union, had served many years on the Marston school and township boards.
He was laid to rest in Pettibone cemetery with the Rev. Barter of Jamestown officiating at the final rites.
Pallbearers were Julius Larsen, Hugh Marston, Ole Sandvick, J.A. Johnson, Frank Kelley and F. Rohde.
Mr. Rice was born in Hardin county, Iowa, February 27, 1857. He received his education there and on December 25, 1878, Mr. Rice and Elvina Prinkey were married in Hardin county.
They came to Marstonmoor township and made their home since. Mrs. Rice died several years ago.
They were the parents of 14 sons and daughters. Two sons, an infant and Fremont Wesley, preceded their parents in death. Fremont died October 17, 1918 enroute overseas in World War One. He enlisted June 14, 1918 and was sent overseas October 6, 1918. His death was caused from pneumonia. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
Survivors are the following sons and daughters: Mrs. O.M. Studebaker and Mrs. Elmer Neuman, Jamestown; Mrs. Esther Larson, Woodworth; Daniel, Walter and Hattie Biersdorff, Pettibone; James, Albany, Ore; Mrs. A.E. Bellows, Bayfield, Wis; Alva Hopkins, Grand Rapids, Minn; Mrs. C.R. Fitch, Dallas, Ore; Mrs. James Hill, Pingree; Mrs. Felix Talley, Anacortes, Ore.
Two sisters, four brothers, 26 grandchildren and 24 great grand children.
The many floral offerings and memorials showed the high esteem held by the community.
