Graduated Reading High School on 15 June 1892. Taught for several terms before entering Bridgewater State Normal School from which she graduated on 27 June 1896.

Miss Lena W Barrus, Veteran Teacher, Dies
Goshen – Miss Lena Wakefield Barrus, 83, of Lithia died Sunday morning in Dickinson Hospital, following a heart attack. She was born in Goshen Nov. 2, 1875, daughter of the late Sen. Alvin and Emiline (Parker) Wakefield Barrus. She attend local schools Reding [sic] High School and Bridgewater State Teachers College. She later received a degree at Columbia University, after which she taught in Ashfield, Goshen, Cummington, Gardner, Holyoke and Passaic, N.J., and several years in New Yok [sic] City until her retirement in 1941. She was a member of Broadway Tabernacle, N.Y., later transferring her membership to Goshen Congregational Church. She was also a member of Appalachain [sic] Mountain Club, DAR, Business and Professional Women’s Club of Northampton. She was founder and president for several years of Hampshire Hills Handicraft Association. She leaves her brother former Rep. George L. Barrus of this town several nieces and nephews, a grand-niece and several grandnephews. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Porter funeral service of Cummington. Funeral will be held in Goshen Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon at 3, following an organ prelude by a cousin Mrs. Ruth Dyer Schoetle. Dr. John A Shaw will officiate. The committal service will be at the church and burial will be in Goshen Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours.
