She was baptised Mary Ann O'Hanlan on 13 Oct 1833, with godparents Peter Smith and Bridget Smith at St. James R.C. church, Potosi. (The Smith and O'Hanlon families were close: Peter Smith and Mary Byrne had James O'Hanlon as godfather for their son James Smith two years earlier).
