Dorothy M. Sands, 93, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of St. Mary's Apartments, died at 6 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

She was born on Nov. 20, 1916, in Dubuque, daughter of Peter and Gertrude (Matthews) Coyle. She attended Franklin Elementary School in Dubuque, and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.

She married Paul T. Sands on June 18, 1937, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on March 14, 1971.

Dorothy was a nurse's aide at St. Dominic Villa for more than 33 years.

She was a member of St. Raphael's Cathedral and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She also was an RSVP Volunteer and a foster grandmother at Lincoln Elementary School for 10 years, until she was 90 years old.

Dorothy enjoyed playing bingo, going to 4:30 Mass and going out to eat with her friends. She also was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Her faith, her family and her friends were all very important to Dorothy. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice L.(Ronald) Kutsch and Judy A. (Dennis) Ball, both of Dubuque; three sons, Paul T. (Mary Anne) Sands Jr., of Bartlett, Ill., Robert G. (Janet) Sands, of Madison, Wis., and James P. (Patricia) Sands, of Lafayette, Ind.; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Pregler, of Dubuque; two sisters-in-law, Marcie Coyle and Nellie Coyle, both of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Ruth Lamasters; and seven brothers, Raymond, Albert, George "Sonny," Glen, Leslie, Merlin "Ted" and Harold "Buzzer" Coyle.
