Funeral services for Julia Claggett Kirby Lawson, 92, of Lufkin will be held Monday, April 23, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles M. Roberts, Reverend David Hicks and Reverend Randall Green officiating. Entombment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park Sunset Mausoleum.

Julia Lawson was born in her home July 17, 1919 in Cherrydale, Arlington County, Virginia, to Ida May (Douglas) Kirby and Walter Claggett Kirby. She died Thursday, April 19, 2012 in a local hospital. She was educated in Arlington County schools, and graduated from Washington & Lee High School in 1938. She attended business school and graduated from Washington Bible College in Washington, D.C.

From 1942 to 1955 she worked as a statistician for the U.S. Marine Corps at the Navy Annex, Fort Myer, Virginia. During her younger years, she and her sister Marjorie Kirby Williams sang together on the radio, at churches, and religious events throughout Northern Virginia and surrounding states.

In 1953, Julia married Clarence Leo Lawson, and resided in Alexandria, Virginia until being transferred in 1963 to Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas. After her husband's retirement, the couple moved in 1979 to Lufkin, Texas to be closer to their only son, David Lawson. After her husband's death, Julia moved to PineCrest Retirement Center in Lufkin, and enjoyed nearly 10 years in her new home surrounded by her many friends.

Julia was a member of Cherrydale Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia for many years, and was a faithful member of Denman Avenue Baptist Church in Lufkin since 1979.

Julia is survived by her son, David Clarence Lawson of Lufkin; cousin, Margie F. Donald of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; niece, Joan Blacketer and husband Jack of Bellmead, Texas; nephew, Eric Williams and wife Beth of Vienna, Virginia; and brother-in-law, Thomas H. Williams of Sebring, Florida.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence Lawson in 1997; sister, Eleanor Kirby in 1983; and sister, Marjorie Williams in January 2012.

Honorary pallbearer will be Ronnie Lusk, her deacon from her church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Denman Avenue Baptist Church, 1807 East Denman Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901, PineCrest Retirement Center, 1302 Tom Temple Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904, or to a charity of your choice.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
