B.C. Holt, 74, pioneer resident of Hutchinson County who was instrumental in developing the Holt community, died at 11:45 p.m. Sunday in North Plains Hospital after a lingering illness.

Holt was born Sept. 2, 1878, at Mt. Grove, Mo., and moved to Hutchinson County in 1899, from Henrietta, Tex., where he lived about one year. He homesteaded about three sections of land near Holt community and has extensive farming and ranching operation in that area. In 1900 Holt was the leading figure in the development of the community that bears his name.

He donated land for the Holt school, established in 1902, and for the Holt cemetery, established in 1904. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Spearman. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Farrington, Houston and Mrs. A.Bruce Marshall, Houston; four sons, J.N., Dallas, O.C., Fred and Nolan, all of Holt Community; eight grandchildren; one half-brother, W.T. Coble, Amarillo; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Otis Price and Mrs. Charles Remy, both of Ada, Okla.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the First Methodist Church, Spearman, with the Rev. H.A. Nichols, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Stratford officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.B. Stewart, pastor of the First Methodist Church, Spearman, and the Rev. O.L. Bryant, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Spearman.

Pallbearers will be Medlin Patterson, John Bishop, Woodwell Jarvis, M.W. Lackey, John Close and Olin Sheets.

Burial will be in the Holt cemetery.
