John was buried with his wife, Valeria Ann Perkins, in the family cemetery (recorded in Dekalb CO, GA as the Jones-Perkins-Hawkings Cemetery)located next door to his homeplace on Covington Highway just East of Avondale Estates in Dekalb CO, GA. In later years , it was reported to family that a "neighbor" had removed the markers from the cemetery and made door steps from them. The stones were not ever found, but the burial was recorded from the oral history given by their granddaugter, Ella Hawkins Edwards who also lived in the area, to her granddaughter, Frances Long Greene. It is also recorded in Franklin Garrett's cemetery survey of the 1930s.

According to 1900 Alabama census records he was a "retired dentist" and date of birth was recorded as October 1823.
