Gus Backhaus III, 80, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004 in the Manor Oaks Nursing Center in Rockdale. Graveside services were held 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 at I.O.O.F Cemetery in Rockdale with Rev. John Warren of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rockdale officiating. Mr. Backhaus was born Oct. 31, 1923 in Rockdale to Gus Backhaus Jr. and Gertrude (Schukraft) Backhaus. Mr. Backhaus was a member of U.S. Army before retiring in 1964. He also attended Texas A&M University and was a Corp member. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rockdale, 1941 graduate of Rockdale High School. Survivors include son, Robert Backhaus of Peekskill, New York; daughter, Patricia Burkhardt and husband Gary of San Antonio; grandchildren, Lori Nicole Burkhardt, Chad Garet Burkhardt and Kathleen Backhaus; a sister, Peggy Cook of Tuscon, Arizona. Memorials may be made to Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 586, Rockdale.
