Mr. Madden was born Oct. 28, 1910, the oldest son of Oscar Thomas and Grace Shuffelfurger-Madden. He graduated from Emporia Senior High School in 1929 and that same year attended Chillicothe, Mo., Business College.
The Depression years he spent working in a grocery store in Emporia until he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad in the signal department on June 21, 1937, and retired on Aug. 30, 1974.
He married Shirley Lucille Grisell on May 25, 1932, at Bartly, Red Willow Co., Neb. She preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 1993. He also was preceded in death by his eldest, Richard Madden, and his daughter, Sheryl Ann Marley.
He was a longtime member of Central Park Christian Church, Orient Lodge No. 51 AF & AM for more than 50 years and the Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen of America.
Mr. Madden is survived by a son, Larry Ross Madden, Topeka; a brother, Lloyd Madden, Midland, Texas; seven grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Mr. Madden will lie in state beginning at noon Friday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
