In head-on car-van crash

A man was killed and a woman injured Tuesday morning (17 June 1997) in what police believe was a head-on collision near South Hermitage and Longview roads in Hermitage.
Fred Shingledecker, 50, of 35 S. Hermitage Road, Hermitage was pronounced dead at the scene by Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle III. The cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma to the chest. Julie Kelly, 35, of 207 N. Erie St, Mercer, was taken to Horizon Hospital System, Shenango Valley, Farrell.
A spokesman for the hospital said Ms. Kelly was in stable condition this morning. Police said Shingledecker had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. They are investigating whether the condition contributed to his death. Police Capt Ed Stanton said Shingledecker's car was south¬bound on South Hermitage Road at about 11:44 am. when it crossed the center line and was hit by Ms Kelly's northbound step van. "We speculate he was trying to turn," he said. Police Chief John Marriott said he believes both vehicles were traveling the posted speed limit of 40 mph when they collided. At the time of the accident, witnesses, many of whom were eating lunch at Combine Brothers restaurant or fueling up at Sheetz convenience store, said they heard the crash or saw the smoke rising from the wreckage. Jeff Combine, co-owner of Combine Brothers, said he and his brother were on the second floor of the restaurant when they heard the crash. Combine said he ran outside. "We saw some smoldering," he said. Heidi Garrett, a Sheetz employee, said several customers ran into the store asking for fire extinguishers. "We didn't know how bad it was until we got outside," she said. Ms. Garrett and Combine sprayed the engines with fire extinguishers, but , Combine said, it was already too late to save Shingledecker. He said Ms. Kelly lay on the grass in front of Sheetz until the ambulance arrived. According to police, there have not been many accidents on the five-lane highway since it opened last fall.

Funeral will be held Friday for Fred Shingledecker, 785 S. Hermitage Road, Hermitage. He died at 11:44 a.m. Tuesday, (6-17-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville, from blunt force trauma after an automobile accident. He was 50.
Mr. Shingledecker was born April 27, 1927, in West Middlesex, to Ralph and Aletha Ryhal Shingledecker.
He was an Air Force veteran, having served in the Vietnam Conflict.
He was an inspector at the former Sharon Steel Corp., Farrell plant.
Surviving are: his mother Hermitage; a sister Mona Morton, Sharon, and three brothers, Charles Foster and James Shingledecker both of Hermitage; and Ralph Shingledecker, Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Ernest Shingledecker.
Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to Parkinson's Foundation, New York, NY.
Burial: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
