He was born in Springfield on Oct. 11, 1907, the son of Charles and Edna B. (Solomon) Gardner. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1926, and had lived in Springfield, Monson, and Wakefield, moving to Athol in 1952.
He worked as a chemist, operating the Athol Lacquer Company on Lumber Street in Athol for more than 20 years. He had previously worked for the Monsanto Chemical Company in Springfield for many years.
He had been a member of Athol Congregational Church for many years, sang in the church choir and served as church treasurer for many years. He was a former member of the Athol-Orange Rotary Club for more than 30 years, and served on the town of Athol building committee during the construction of the Pleasant Street School.
His wife of many years, Ella May (North) Gardner, died in 1983.
He leaves three sons, Roger W. Gardner of Athol, Everett C. Gardner of St. Cloud, Fla., Richard H. Gardner of Orange; a brother, Ralph Gardner of Hadley; two sisters, Pearl McCurry and Grace Meehan both of East Longmeadow; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Gardner and Bertrum Gardner.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. in the Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home in Athol with the Rev. Harold V. Lloyd Jr., pastor of the Athol Congregational Church, officiating.
Burial will follow at South Cemetery in Orange and there will be a calling hour from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross, Disaster Relief Fund, 114 Merriam Ave., Leominster, Mass. 01453.
