There is a printed Report No. 636 for the 44th Congress, House ofRepresentatives titled "William J. Alexander" and dated June 9, 1876. It describes a claim submitted to the War Claims Committee for payment to William J. Alexander and says in part that he was employed by General Wilcox as a detective in 1863.

That said William J. Alexander was employed as a detective in the secret service of the United States, by order of Brig. Gen. O. B. Wilcox, who was in command of a department at that time, which comprised within it the State of Indiana. That said employment was made on or about the 3d day of July, 1863, at the rate of $125 per month; that Mr. Alexander continued in said service until about the 20th day of December following; ..."

There is a statement by Morton C. Hunter of Bloomington, dated 30 Dec. 1891, stating that he was a member of the House of Representatives in 1877 and introduced a bill for the relief of William J. Alexander "by reason of services during the year 1863". He goes on to say that the bill was passed as reported "recommending that the Secretary of the Treasury pay said Alexander the sum of $250 as payment in full balance due said Alexander for his said services in the Secret Service of the U. S. during 1863. I am familiar with all the facts connected with this case and I know that this claim is just and ought to be paid." [signed] Morton C. Hunter
