James Daniel Harden enlisted September 24, 1861 as a Private in the North Carolina 39th Infantry Regiment in Cherokee County, North Carolina. He was promoted to full 1st Lieutenant November 18, 1862. Promoted to full Captain December 10, 1863.

James Daniel Harden's family moved from Graham, N.C. to Franklin, N.C. during the final days of the Civil War. After the war ended James Daniel Harden married Mary H. McIver and moved to Cheraw, S.C. as a contractor for building the railroad from Cheraw, S.C. to Salisbury, N.C. James Daniel Harden brought his parents and other family members from Franklin, N.C. to live near Cheraw, S.C. Later on James Daniel Harden moved to Morven, N.C. where his parents joined him there.
