ANDERSON, Ind. — Virgil Leon Earlywine, 78, Anderson, died May 19, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a three-month illness.

He was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Anderson, the son of Joseph and Irene (Hewlett) Earlywine. Virgil retired in 1980 from the former Delco Remy in Anderson and he retired 2006 from training thoroughbred horses for over 50 years.

He was a member of the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association; and the Indiana Horseman's Benevolent Protective Association.

He is survived by his wife of 43 wonderful years . . ..

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rita Lynn Earlywine; a granddaughter, Rita Jo Isenhower; a great-granddaughter, Chelsea Long; four brothers, Don, Doyle, Russell, and Jim; and two sisters, Geneva Austin and
Linda Boerner.

Graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Brookside Cemetery in Lapel and burial will follow.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main St., Lapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) P.O. Box 803, Elmhurst, Illinois USA 60126; the American Diabetes Association; the American Heart Society; or the American Cancer Society.
