In October, 1943, I, Erald (Long) Anderson came to Muleshoe to go to work for W. M. Pool, Jr. at Plainview Production Credit Ass'n. I left my two small sons, Jimmie and Joe Loyd with my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Long on the farm in the Bellview Community, southeast of Plainview. I took a small apartment owned by Mrs. Moeller on the alley back of St. Clairs. I liked my job and saw this would be a good place for my boys. Jimmie came to start to school and we moved into a better apartment belonging to Mary Hart. We lived here two years. Jimmie went back to the farm in the summer. Joe Loyd started to school in 1946. We moved to the downstairs apartment of Gus Priboth's two story house in the 400 block of West Second Street.
In the summer of 1946 I met Arnold Gross, who was just out of the navy. Jimmie and Joe Loyd approved of him, and we were married February 21, 1947. Arnold worked with his daddy in the carpenter shop at Sanders Lumber Yard. I quit work for a few months. Then in February 1948 I went to work for Bailey County Electric Coop. We bought a lot at the corner of Thirteenth and Avenue D. Arnold and his daddy built our house. Our neighbors were the L. A. Greens, and Bill Chitwoods, old friends of Arnold's. Now their kids and ours were friends. The Frank Snyders also lived nearby.
Arnold, Jimmie and Joe Loyd got along great. All the kids came to play Canasta with Arnold, and he took them everywhere. The boys still went to the farm in the summer, and Jimmie worked for my brother, Fred Long at Olton. Arnold adopted the boys when they were old enough to make the decision themselves.
I worked for Bailey County Electric Coop for two years, then worked part time for Hicks Tractor. I got into leather tooling, and then had an American National Insurance Debit for a year. During this time Arnold went to work for Bailey County Electric Coop. He worked there four years, went back to Sanders Lumber Yard for a while. He followed roving construction work for a few years. He went back to Bailey County Electric in Five Area Telephone Department. He retired from Five Area Telephone Coop Ass'n in February, 1983 after twenty-five years.
In 1953 I went back to Bailey County Electric, working in the engineering department for Owen Jones. I worked for Mr. Jones seventeen years, then three years in bookkeeping, quitting just six weeks short of twenty years, so I could go to California and bake the wedding cake for Joe Loyd's wedding.
During this time, the boys gew up, Jimmie was in the navy four years. Joe Loyd finished high school, then went to West Texas State. He was in the army five years, and never returned to Muleshoe to live. Jimmie worked on a farm near Muleshoe for several years after he returned from the navy. During this time he married Wanda Chitwood, this soon ended in divorce. They had a son Brad. He went to work for Bailey County Electrip Coop and soon married Lora Mae Meyers from Lazbuddie.
Lora Mae died in childbirth on April 27, 1962. Jimmie and the baby Debra came back to live with us. They lived with us almost three years. In December of 1964, he married Carolyn Pruitt. After a few years, they moved to Odessa, and they have another daughter Renee.
I have sewed, painted, tooled leather, baked fancy cakes, and did just whatever craft was popular. In the mid fifties, I got back into china painting. After quitting my job, I opened a china shop. I have taught some, made Arts & Crafts Fairs in Ruidoso, Portales, and Tucumcari, New Mexico; Friona and Running Water Draw in Plainview. I belong to a china painting club in Lubbock and have made several Texas State Conventions.
We are members of the First United Methodist Church. Arnold is active in the Odd Fellow Lodge, and watches the "Soaps."
I have fought the battle of cancer, and, so far I am winning. Kidney problems have really slowed me down the last few years. (Submitted by Erald L. Gross)
