Artist. He served as a Captain in the 1st Maryland Continental Infantry during the Revolutionary War, seeing action at the Battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine and Monmouth. His older brother was artist Charles Willson Peale, and he learned painting from him while serving as his assistant. After he left the Continental Army in 1779, he gained a reputation as a premier painter of miniature portraits and still lifes. From 1780 until his eyesight failed in 1810, he executed over 200 miniature portraits, over 100 still-lifes, and a number of historical paintings pertaining to the Revolutionary War.
