On November 1,1866 Susan married Civil War leader, Nicholas Ware Eppes, "My Soldier in Gray" as she called him in her book "Through Some Eventful Years." She would not allow intoxicating drinks served to her guests at the wedding reception. On her mother's orders there were to be no wedding presents due to the impoverished south.

She was the daughter of Dr. Edward Bradford and his wife Martha Lewis Branch of Pine Hill Plantation. She was the granddaughter of John Branch, the last Territorial Governor of Florida. She was the mother of six children: Edward Bradford Eppes, Susan Ware Eppes, Francis Eppes, Martha Branch Eppes, the only one of her children to marry, Richard H. Bradford, Elizabeth Cleland Eppes and Alice Bradford Eppes. Susan was the author of two books about the south; "Through Some Eventful Years" 1925 and "The Negro of the Old South," 1925 and "Verses from Florida" 1938, and various articles.

In 1920 she was elected Honorary President of Florida Division UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy).
