Actress. Born Mariana Michalska in Krakow, Poland, she emigrated with hers parents to the United States in 1909 and became a dancer popularizing a dance called the "shimmy" which became fashionable in 1920s films and theater productions. Between 1919 and 1936 she made several movies in which she performed her famous shimmy which included "Girl with the Jazz Heart", "The Devil Dancer", "Aloma of the South Seas" and "Cabaret".
