Mrs Owen Dies of Leukemia
Distinguished Archeologist

Funeral services for Mrs Wilbur A Owen, who distinguished herself as an archaeologist in the 1940’s, will be at 3 pm Monday in Adair Funeral Home.

Mrs Owen, 76, died yesterday of leukemia at Tucson Medical Center after a year’s illness.

A graduate of Tempe Normal who became a Bisbee school teacher, Mrs Owen moved to Tucson after she had married and took a degree in art at the University of Arizona and a master’s degree in archaeology.

Her archaeology work among Indians of South America led to her recognition in 1940 at the Woman’s Centennial Congress in New York City as one of 150 distinguished women.

She traveled along among tribes in Colombia and Venezuela, where natives had never seen a white woman. Her investigation also took her to Mexico.

She was the mother of Mrs Herbert F Krucker, wife of Superior Court Judge Krucker, and Mrs Harry Johnson of Jacksonville, FL. Her only son, Cmdr Thomas Patrick McGrath, graduate of the Naval Academy, died in World War II action.

Mrs Owen also is survived by a brother, Dr James Tong of Elizabeth, LA; and a sister, Mrs Elmer J Brown of Tucson, and five grandchildren.

Born Anna Mae Tong in Carlisle, NM Mrs Owen came to Bisbee with her parents as a baby.

She was married to Thomas Orrin McGrath, superintendent of the Shattuck-Denn Mine. They moved to Tucson in 1927.

In 1944 she was married to Wilbur A Owen, patent attorney. They lived in Toledo, OH until his death six years ago. She resided at 333 S Alvernon Way.

The Rev Dr Glenn C McGee, pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church, will officiate at services. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
