Harvey Earl LaMar, 69, Abilene, KS died suddenly, Friday, July 24, 2009, in Cozumel, Mexico, where he had gone for his granddaughter's wedding.
He was born Dec. 15, 1939 in Monte Vista, CO., the son of Elmer and Doris "Block" (Johnstone) LaMar. His family moved to Kansas while he was an infant. He attended grade school in Grinnell and graduated from Oakley High School in 1958. He joined the army and was stationed at Heilbronn, Germany, in the Fourth Armored Division as a tank recovery mechanic.
On Jan., 22, 1961, he married Janet Thrasher. He attended Fort Hays State University and Compton Community College. He owned a garage and service station in Oakley, and then in Redondo Beach, CA. After working for Sinclair Koppers in Long Beach, he became maintenance superintendent and worked up to engineer in charge of new construction for Star-Kist Foods in American Samoa and Puerto Rico.
The family returned to Kansas in 1975, where he owned a construction company, building many homes and businesses in the Russel and Grest Bend area.
LaMAr went to work for the Arizona Automaotive Institute in 1982 as an educational representative. In 1987 he transferred to the Universal Technical Institute, retiring in 2005.
After retirement, he was elected president of the Red Bud Lake Improvement District, and oversaw the installation of a new water and sewr project.
He worked hard his entire life. and was always ready to help anyone who needed it.
LaMar was preceeded in death by his parents and his stepfather John Block.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; two sons, Harry (Mary) of Silver Lake; and Monte and friend Leeann, Andover; foster daughter Julie Johnstone, Wetmore (Jetmore); a brother, Herb (Billie) LaMar; a sister-in-law, Judy Christian, Salina; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Sauturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene, with Pastor Robert LaMar officiating.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Oakley City Cemetery, with Pastor Dennis Lewallen officiating. The family will reieve friends at the Colonial Steak House following the graveside service.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Red Bud Lake Association, the Alzheimer's Disease Association or the Diabetes Foundation, in care of the funeral home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, KS 67410.
