In Memphsis, TN - he was a sanitation work killed (crushed) by an accident a with an outdated malfunctioning garbage truck -- It was a precursor to the 'Memphis Sanitation Strike' whose slogan was 'I am a Man'. He was 35. It caused Martin Luther King, Jr to come to Memphis where he was later assassinated.

His wife (Earline) was pregnant at the time, and she decided to have him buried in Tallahatchie County, MS in the Delta in a paupers grave where their families had been field hands.
