Clara G. Johnson, 94, Moscow, Idaho and formerly of Watertown, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, in a Moscow care center. She was the widow of Benjamin W. Johnson.
Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eric Grinager officiating. Music will be provided by organist Eugene Doutt.
Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Miller, Elwood Brugman, Ed Johnson, Richard Skinner and Keith James.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Sogn-Messer Funeral Home and in the church prior to the services Monday. The family is requested to meet in the church by 9:15 a.m. Monday for a prayer service.
Clara G. Johnson was born Oct. 4, 1909, at Clear Lake, the daughter of John and Nellie (Peterson) Walseth. She grew up in Clear Lake and graduated from Watertown High School. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree in home economics from S.D. State University at Brookings. She had been a high school home economics teacher in Wakonda and Mobridge. In Webster, she was the home management supervisor for Farmers Home Administration. As an officer in the USNR-WR (Waves) during WWII she had lived in Washington, D.C.
She married Benjamin W. Johnson in Watertown Jan. 29, 1950. They lived in Watertown where she was the home economics agent in Codington County for many years before she retired in 1972. During their retirement, they spent many winters in Donna, Texas.
She was a life member of the National Association of Extension Home Economists, past president of S.D. Extension Home Economists, a member of United Methodist Women, First United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, the Business and Professional Women and the American Association of University Women. She enjoyed reading, sewing and needlework.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dec. 4, 1993.
Survivors include one son, Robert S. (Linda) Johnson of Moscow; one grandson; a brother, John (Cassie) Walseth of Riverside, Calif.; and one sister, Jean Walseth of Freeman.
