Melvin was one of 8 children. He had 7 children from his first marriage with Marie Zine. The first five were placed for adoption in December of 1957. Roger Dale, Carol Sue, Linda Gail, Valerie, and Elvin Gale. After Marie and Melvin had Rickey Charles and Brenda they were given up for adoption in care of Marie's side of the family.
Melvin later married Alice Novell Roberts Turner Ainsworth and she had three sons from her previous marriage to Billie Dee Turner. Melvin enjoyed the company of his brothers. Every New Years we would go to his home and have a great time. He loved his cowboy boots and western hats. He always had a story to tell and would make you laugh. Melvin and Alice were always seen together. He passed away from cancer and his wife Alice passed away a couple years after him from cancer.
