William Tranter, brother of Joseph Tranter who was the father of Walter Edward Tranter, was born at Tarlton, Gloucester, England, near Londa in 1849/ He was never married.

William migrated to America about 1872 to Wisconsin, probably LaCrosse County. In 1882, he negotiated with Edgar and Delilah Jones for the purchase of the NW 1/4 of Section 13, Gilbert Township, Hand County, South Dakota for the sum of $1,075.00. He purchased additional land until he owned three quarters in Hand County and one quarter in Beadle County.

William persuaded his nephew, Walter E. Tranter to come to America. They farmed together until Walter purchased the farm in 1915.

William made a trip back to England in 1914, returning to America that fall. He died March 26, 1915 of a heart attack and is buried in the Wessington Cemetery, Wessington, South Dakota.
