Beatrice Ray, 89, formerly of the Connersville community, died Friday evening, May 14, 2010, at Heritage House of New Castle, where she had resided since October.

Beatrice was the daughter of Fred Edward and Clara Belle Sherwood Ball, born July 15, 1920, in Rush County. She was a 1938 graduate of Mays High School, Rush County. On March 4, 1939, she was married in Lewisville to Vernon Castle Ray, who died Jan. 5, 2001. For eight years, she was employed as a cook with the Fayette County School Corp. and later was the cook and kitchen supervisor at Fayette Memorial Hospital for 19 years. In 1991, she retired as the cook at Heritage House of Connersville. Noodles, dumplings and yeast rolls were her specialties that were always enjoyed at family gatherings. Beatrice was an accomplished seamstress, sewing her family's clothes, purses and doll clothes. For several years, she was a regular at the Golay Center. Beatrice enjoyed listening to music, traveling and the companionship of her dog, Harley.

Beatrice is survived by two daughters, Connie K. Ray and William Blanchard of Richmond, Joy Buckley and her husband Carol of Glenwood; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Ray of Connersville; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren with another expected soon; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Frederick V. Ray, who died Aug. 18, 1980; two sisters, Mabel Worley and Mazie Ball; two brothers, Alden and Maynard Ball; an infant brother and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Pastor Ray Sweet III, of the Plum Creek Christian Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Everton Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from noon Tuesday until the time of service, where memorial contributions may be made to Indiana University Alzheimer Research.
