LYNCHBURG -- Ada Belle Dennis Hudgens, 97, died October 28, 2007 after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be Tuesday October 30, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. at Lynchburg United Methodist Church, Lynchburg. Interment will follow in the Presbyterian Cemetery.
Ada Belle Hudgens was born Sept. 14, 1910, in Lynchburg, SC, the daughter of Theodosia Phillips Dennis and Daniel Patrick Dennis. She attended Lynchburg Public Schools and at an early age demonstrated talent for and mastery of the piano. As a result, she began a career as a private piano teacher. She later served as choral director for the Public Schools. In that position, she directed innumerable school pageants, talent shows and graduation exercises over the span of fifty years. She became the pianist for the Lynchburg United Methodist Church at age 14 and continued in that position for 75 years until moving to the Methodist Manor in Florence in 1999.
"Miss Ada Belle," as she was affectionately called by her students, instilled in them an abiding appreciation for music and its ability to inspire, to soothe and to entertain.
In 1930, she wed Roy E. Hudgens, Sr., originally from Newberry, SC, who had been appointed superintendent of schools in Lynchburg. He preceded her in death in June 1964 after an illustrious career as an educator and a community leader in his church and in secular affairs for over thirty years.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. Roy E. Hudgens, Jr. and his wife, Lottie Cummings, Florence, Dr. John H. Hudgens, II and his wife, Martha Eargle, Columbia; and a special nephew, Dr. Patrick H. Dennis, Sr. and his wife, Myrtle Ann Benton, of Charleston; five grandchildren, Dr. Roy E. "Eddie" Hudgens, III (Monica), Charleston, Dr. David Gordon Hudgens (Ming), Columbia, William Joseph Hudgens, Florence, John Hampton Hudgens, III, J.D.LL.M. (Karen), Columbia, Lillian Hudgens Dennis (Rev. Dr. Ted) Pennsylvania; nine great-grandchildren, Eric and Joshua Dennis, Jack, Luke and Nick Hudgens, Annie and Courtney Hudgens, Hanson and Elizabeth Hudgens.
She was the adopted grandmother of Dr. Patrick Dennis, Jr. (Rosemary), Charleston, Lisa Dennis Daly (CMDR Mike, Ret.), Arlington, VA, and Jeffrey B. Dennis, Charleston, and their children Tradd and Logan Dennis and Mary Elizabeth Daly.
Mrs. Hudgens was predeceased by a sister, Lina Dennis Truluck; and three brothers, Ira Dennis, Perry Patrick Dennis and James Alva Dennis, Sr.
